Jack and Inez

I first met Jack and Inez when I was about 20 years old and they would probably have been in their 50s. They lived next door to my sister and we interacted frequently on social occasions. Their 2 daughters were grown and married so Inez started taking in foster children with special needs. It was a joy to see her interactact with the children. They would get off the school bus and race into her arms as if they hadn't seen her for a lifetime, but she couldn't maintain the hectic pace of taking care of small children and became more and more tired until she found herself having naps shortly after she had just gotten up for the day. Eventually she was forced to acknowledge that something was not right. The doctor informed her that heart surgery was necessary and while the surgery was a complete success the only side effect being that she died from a thrown blood clot. To add insult to injury, Jack discover that he had cancer, and soon followed Inez into the great hereafter. Or did he? A young couple with one small boy bought Jack and Inez's house. A few months later the young woman came knocking at my sister's door to enquire if she had known the previous tenants. My sister invited her in for coffee and listened to her story. It seems they had a ghost, of the nasty variety, and it had taken a disliking to their son. She claimed that she invited a woman who she worked with over to supper one night, and as soon as the woman entered the home she suddenly announced that she "couldn't stay in this house a moment longer", grabbed her coat and fled. Her son would wake up in the night screaming that "the man" was hitting him. My sister relayed this tale to me hoping I would have some idea what to do. I was shocked. Jack had seemed like such a nice man, why would he turn so nasty? My sister told me that she had heard several stories about Jack after his death that weren't so nice. It seems he resented Inez bringing in foster children. They had raised their family and this time was supposed to be for them, to do all the things they had planned but hadn't had to opportunity to do. He was sick and tired of the responsibilty of raising children. My suggestion to my sister was to tell this woman to talk to Jack, out loud. Assure him that this child he was terrorizing was not his responsibility, none of his concern and they would appreciate it if he would just ignore the child. My sister has since passed over and I'm left wondering, whatever happened to Jack?
