Record attempt evacuates restaurant

CALGARY (CP) - The fire department ended up blowing out the candles on a giant birthday cake made by culinary students to celebrate Alberta's 100th birthday Thursday.

The students from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology had hoped to set a word record by lighting more than 20,000 candles on the cake at the downtown Chicago Chophouse restaurant.

But the flames quickly filled the room with smoke and fire officials ordered an evacuation of the building, moving in with fire extinguishers to put out the blaze.

Some people leaving the restaurant were still coughing outside, but there were no serious injuries.

Prats! I once did that for a birthday with about 40 candles and it was obvious by about the 20th candle being lit this was going to get out of control. Not to mention that the melted wax on the cake and dripping off made the cake inedible.

Why were they attempting 20,000 candles for Alberta's 100th Anniversary? Yeah, I know a world's record but you have to admit it sounds very silly, 20,000 candles for a 100th Anniversary.
